Description
How Do We Become Addicted?
An addiction can be formed by continued participation with the substance or activity that activates the dopamine reward system in the brain. This continued participation can alter brain chemistry, causing cravings long after the substance or habit has been stopped. The cravings cause vulnerability to relapse. Relapse is a return to the substance or habit to relieve uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Participation with a substance or activity is often used as a form of self-medication, to calm and soothe our moods, or distract us during stressful situations or emotional difficulties.
